the lemon tart

Once a week I take my friend Ca. supermarket shopping. This is very good for an unstructured person like me. She even walks up and down the aisles in a logical sequence. I am impressed at how effective this approach is. I no longer run out of stuff throughout the week. Life is much easier.

Ca. is an inveterate treat buyer.

This week one of her treats is a delicious lemon tart. Yum. I love the Co-op’s lemon tarts.

I place it on top of one of my bags and, mouth watering, bear it home.

Well aware of Hairy One’s propensity for bag snatching, I close the kitchen door carefully behind the shopping while I put away my coat.

Hand on doorknob, I am about to re-enter the kitchen. Greased lightning couldn’t compete with her. Isis slides past the nearest bag, scooping my delicious tart into her mouth as she passes.

“Oh no!”, I yelp in disbelief. At which she stands still in order to concentrate on yoffing down as much of the tart as possible before I reach her. Glump! She chokes down half of it, including the paper case. Schlop! Her long pink tongue scoops up a piece which has fallen on the floor.

Just to show who’s boss, I retrieve the last fragment.

I can almost taste the delectable tart.

“It’s your own fault ….. yak etc., yak,” Polymath, always the sympathetic one, later admonishes.

I know.

I was so looking forward to it.

Sigh.

Isis came from the Aeza cat and dog rescue and adoption centre in Aljezur, Portugal. For information about adopting an animal from the centre, contact kerry@aeza.org or  www.dogwatchuk.co.uk

You have to hand it to her – that’s pretty amazing considering she’s practically blind!
